25–30 minutes

CENTRAL FOCUS:

Students will explore the element of line, recognize different types of lines, and create artwork that demonstrates their understanding of how lines are used in visual expression.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:

6.VA.Cr1.A: Combine concepts collaboratively to generate innovative ideas for creating art.

LESSON OBJECTIVE(S):

Students will design an abstract line composition inspired by music using a variety of line qualities (thick, thin, jagged, flowing).

MATERIALS:

Large drawing paper, colored pencils or oil pastels, music clips (instrumental), speakers, projector.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction:

Play 2 different music clips. Ask: 'What would this sound look like as a line?'

Procedures:

·       • Discuss expressive qualities of line (mood, energy).

·       • Play music again as students draw lines responding to sound.

·       • Refine compositions using repetition, movement, and contrast.

·       • Optional share-out: students explain their artistic choices.

Closure:

Reflect: 'How did the music change the way you used line?'

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:

Evaluate for emotional expression, use of varied lines, and composition balance.
