Length of Lesson:

25–30 minutes

CENTRAL FOCUS:

Students will explore geometric and organic shapes by identifying, comparing, and incorporating them into a creative artwork.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:

3.VA.Cr2.A: Demonstrate an understanding of the safe and proficient use of materials, tools, and equipment for a variety of artistic processes.

4.VA.Cr1.A: Brainstorm multiple approaches to a creative art or design problem.

LESSON OBJECTIVE(S):

Students will use both geometric and organic shapes to create a 'Shape Stencil' artwork demonstrating variety and composition.

MATERIALS:

Drawing paper, pencils, black markers, crayons or colored pencils, shape reference chart, projector or smart board.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Do Now:

List 3 geometric shapes and 2 organic shapes you already know.

Introduction:

Review the difference between geometric and organic shapes. Show examples in artwork and nature.

Procedures:

• Students sketch several shapes (organic/geometric)

• Add geometric shapes for background (sun, pots, paths, etc).

• Trace with marker and color using chosen media.

Closure:

Group share: Describe how you used both types of shapes.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:

Artwork will be assessed for inclusion of both shape types and thoughtful composition. Informal peer reflections support understanding.

Design a piece of art using both geometric and organic shapes. Add at least 5 different shapes to your drawing. Lay a stencil on top of your shapes and outline and color only the inside of the shape.
